Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)

Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) is a psychological therapy which aims to help us develop a greater understanding of ourselves and others, particularly within our relationships. It can be helpful when we find ourselves experiencing repeated relational difficulties, intense emotional reactions, or difficulties understanding why we think, feel or behave in particular ways.

Mentalizing refers to our ability to make sense of our own thoughts, feelings, wishes and intentions, whilst also being curious about what might be happening in another person’s mind. This capacity can become more difficult when we feel emotionally overwhelmed, rejected, criticised, threatened or particularly close to someone.

MBT is a process which encourages us to slow down and become curious about our experiences. It can help us explore questions such as:

  • What is happening for me right now?
  • What might I be feeling and what meaning am I making of the situation?
  • What might the other person be thinking or feeling?
  • How certain am I about what I believe is happening?
  • Could there be another way of understanding the situation?
  • How do my feelings, expectations and previous experiences influence the way I relate to others?

Our early relationships and attachment experiences can influence the way we understand ourselves and other people. They can shape our expectations of relationships and the ways in which we respond to closeness, rejection, conflict, disappointment or uncertainty. These patterns can become established over time and may continue to influence our relationships in adulthood, often without us being fully aware of them.

Through the therapeutic process, we can explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion. We can begin to recognise the connection between our emotions, thoughts, assumptions and behaviours, and develop a greater awareness of how our own experience may differ from that of another person.

The therapeutic relationship itself provides an opportunity to explore what happens between us. Together we can notice moments when it becomes difficult to understand ourselves or each other, and use these experiences to develop greater flexibility, reflection and curiosity. This can create more space between an emotional reaction and a response, allowing new perspectives and possibilities to emerge.

Through MBT you can develop a greater understanding of yourself and your relationships, become more able to manage difficult emotions, and develop new ways of responding to relational situations. This can support more fulfilling communication, connection, intimacy and relationships.
